Where do I begin?

If you would like to enjoy a smoother, more youthful appearance, use our Find a Doctor tool to find a practitioner in your area. After you've found a healthcare professional, ask if Restylane® or Perlane® is right for you.

To help you get the most out of your appointment with your healthcare professional, we've provided a list of suggested questions to help you decide which treatment is right for you.

What do I need to know?

Restylane® and Perlane® are approved for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Perlane® has larger gel particles and is intended for deeper injection to volumize skin for structural support and lift. Your physician can best determine which treatment is right for you.

Restylane® and Perlane® are different from Botox® Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A)

Restylane® and Perlane® are dermal fillers injected into the skin to smooth facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). In contrast, Botox® Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is injected into the muscle to block nerve transmission and relax the muscles that cause frown lines between your eyebrows.

Restylane® and Perlane® are different from animal-based hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products

Restylane® and Perlane® contain no animal proteins. This may limit the risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reactions. Restylane® and Perlane® do not require an allergy test and can be administered immediately, so there is no waiting for treatments. Restylane® and Perlane® contain trace amounts of gram positive bacterial proteins and are contraindicated for patients with a history of allergies to such material.

After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days.

How long does it last?

A patented stabilization technology helps Restylane® and Perlane® deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane® lasts about six months.

Some Perlane® patients maintained results for up to nine months in clinical trials. In two clinical studies, the number of patients maintaining improvement at six months was 63% and 71%, respectively. A clinical study in Scandinavia showed improvement with Perlane® in 49% of patients at nine months, although assessing patients' improvement at nine months was not the main purpose of the study.

How long the aesthetic correction lasts varies. Please talk with your healthcare professional about these results and about treatment duration in general. Also ask about the benefits of scheduling a follow-up appointment in about six months.

    Post-treatment

Cold compresses (a cloth dipped in cold water, wrung out, and applied to the injected area) may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling.

Avoid touching the treated area during the six hours following treatment, so you do not accidentally injure your skin while the area is numb. After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water.

Until any redness or swelling goes away, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing).

If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Speak to your physician about medications that may minimize a recurrence. may minimize a recurrence.

Avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John's wort, and high doses of vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
